The governments of the European Union (EU) have rejected a European Commission’s (EC) proposal to impose duties into the imports of HRC from Brazil, Russia, Iran and Ukraine, according to several media reports.

A media report from Reuters noted some states considered the levies too tough, while others considered them too lax.

The EC has proposed duties of up to 33 percent. Additionally, it proposed duties wouldn’t apply if the product was sold above EUR 427.27/mt ($510.74/mt).

Citing government sources, Reuters said EU countries “including those with steelmakers and those interested in cheap steel,” rejected the overall proposal.

The case will now go to an appeals committee, which is expected to meet on or after September 25.
