EU and U.S. remain in deadlock over tariffs

There was practically no progress at the annual EU-U.S. summit, press reports indicated on May 3. Both nations remain at loggerheads on the steel tariff issue with the EU insisting on compensation in line with a WTO deadline. The deadline for a list of products to go to WTO for review is May 17 and June 18 for any EU counter-measures to start. The U.S. continues to seek ways to extend the June deadline. Despite a weekend meeting between Pascal Lamy, the EU's trade commissioner and Robert Zoellick, U.S. Trade Representative on May 4-5, no major progress has yet been made on the issue.
