EU adds two new steel product categories in its safeguard investigation

The European Commission (EC) has announced that it has added two steel product categories in its safeguard investigation on steel imports, launched in March this year, as a result of the rising imports from other countries due to the steel tariffs of the United States (US). The safeguard investigation previously covered 26 steel product categories.

Accordingly, the two product categories cover non-alloy and other alloy cold finished bars and non-alloy wire currently falling under CN codes 7215 10 00, 7215 50 11, 7215 50 19, 7215 50 80, 7228 10 90, 7228 20 99, 7228 50 20, 7228 50 40, 7228 50 61, 7228 50 69, 7228 50 80, 7217 10 10, 7217 10 31, 7217 10 39, 7217 10 50, 7217 10 90, 7217 20 10, 7217 20 30, 7217 20 50, 7217 20 90, 7217 30 41, 7217 30 49, 7217 30 50, 7217 30 90, 7217 90 20, 7217 90 50 and 7217 90 90.

Meanwhile, Cecilia Malmström, EU Commissioner for Trade, has stated that the European Union (EU) expects to impose provisional safeguard measures on steel imports probably as of mid-July, according to media reports. Malmström stated that the format of the duties, i.e., import duties or quotas, is still in discussion.
