EU-27 October industrial production drops after five months of increase

Seasonally-adjusted industrial production in the European Union member states (EU-27) in October decreased 0.7 percent month on month, according to a report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In September industrial production in the region had increased by 0.1 percent over August, marking the fifth consecutive month that industrial production increased.

On the other hand, compared with October 2008, industrial production in the EU-27 in October this year declined by 10.2 percent.

In October this year, production of durable consumer goods in the EU-27 decreased by 0.2 percent month on month and was down 12.4 percent year on year, while production of capital goods decreased slighlty by 0.1 percent over September and declined by 15.2 percent compared to October 2008. Production of intermediate goods rose by 0.8 percent in October compared to September this year, but was down 12 percent over the same month of the previous year. In addition, production of energy in the EU-27 decreased by 0.3 percent month on month, while the year-on-year drop was seven percent.

Among the member states for which data are available, in October industrial production rose in nine member states and fell in nine other member states, compared to September. The highest month-on-month increases were registered in Finland with 2.2 percent, in Bulgaria with 2.1 percent and in the Netherlands and Poland, both with 0.6 percent; meanwhile, the most significant declines were observed in Slovenia with 3.2 percent, in Ireland with 2.8 percent and in Germany with 1.8 percent.
