According to the statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) on June 25, new motor vehicle registrations in Turkey in April 2009 amounted to 70,189 units, increasing by 19 percent month on month, but down 11.6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. The data show that the month-on-month increases in new registrations of buses and trucks are higher than the corresponding increase in passenger car registrations.
According to other TUIK data, the floor area of buildings for which construction permits were issued in the first quarter of 2009 increased by 5.5 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. In the first three months of the year, based on construction permits issued, the number of new residential buildings under construction rose by 7.4 percent from 18,443 to 19,813, while the floor area of new residential buildings under construction declined by 0.3 percent from 17,751,853 m2 to 17,696,559 m2, both compared to Q1 2008.
Meanwhile, in the January-May period this year home appliance sales in Turkey retreated by 9.6 percent year on year, while home appliance exports declined 11.3 percent compared to the same period of 2008. In May 2009, although home appliances production fell 3.3 percent compared to May 2008, sales in the period in question rose by 21.7 percent due to reduced taxes.
