Coal exports from PWCS up 2.45 percent in 2014

Coal exports from the Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 10.72 million mt in December past year, increasing by 18.91 percent compared to November, according to the company's announcement. 12 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals was coking coal.

In 2014, coking coal exports constituted 12 percent of overall coal exports from PWCS, which totaled 111.89 million mt, up 2.45 compared to 2013.

According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in 2014, with shipments to Japan accounting for 45.28 percent of total shipments, while coal exports to China constituted 22.43 percent of the total.

PWCS accounts for one third of Australia's exports of coal, which is the country's second most important export commodity in terms of value.
