According to a news report in the Turkish newspaper Dünya, with Iranian steel production rising by 20 percent year on year to 18.5 million mt in the January-September period this year, Iran’s steel exports to Turkey are starting to worry the domestic steel industry in Turkey. Stating that imported products from Iran are considerably low-priced in comparison to prices in Turkey, Adnan Aslan, chairman of the Turkish Steel Exporters' Association (CIB), made the case for the possibility of state involvement in prices.
Dünya newspaper quoted Mr. Aslan as stating, “While they were around 1,000 metric tons in September, imported steel products from Iran are currently at the level of 5,000 metric tons. Almost all of these imports are composed of rebar. The imported product prices are incomparably low. This situation creates the impression that sales are not being concluded based on objective costs and that the Iranian state is supporting its steel industry in order to lessen the negative effects of the US embargo on Iran.” Aslan called for the prevention of this unfair competition.
