China exceeds backward capacity elimination targets for 2006-10

Li Yizhong, minister at China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has stated that in the 11th five-year plan period (2006-10), major industries in China have exceeded the targets for elimination of backward production capacities.

Minister Li said that currently it is estimated that 111.72 million mt, 66.83 million mt, 105.38 million mt, 340 million mt and 10.3 million mt of backward capacities will respectively be eliminated from the iron smelting, steelmaking, coking, cement and papermaking industries in China in the 11th five-year plan period, exceeding the elimination targets for the period.
