Chi Jingdong: China’s crude steel use to trend at 750-800 million mt in 2020-25

Chi Jingdong, vice chairman of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), has stated at the 17th International Steel Market and Trade Conference held on March 28 in Nanjing that China’s crude steel consumption has entered a peak plateau period.

He pointed out that, while in 2017 China’s crude steel consumption amounted to 780 million mt, it reached 870 million mt in 2018, and is expected to be in the range of 850-900 million mt in 2019.

Meanwhile, he predicted that in the 2020-25 period China’s crude steel consumption will move in the range of 750-800 million mt, descending to around 700 million mt during the 2026-35 period.
