The Brazilian government is considering changing inspection procedures for local iron ore dams, according to a media report by Estadao. Currently, companies may hire third-party, independent companies to attest the safety of dams.

However, the government is considering allowing ANM to oversee part of the dam inspection process. The media report said ANM could oversee a registry or database of approved dam inspection companies. A government official said Brazil could launch a tender to select dam inspection companies to be added to the database, then, the government could randomly pick up an approved third-party company to audit a given dam.

The Brazilian government said the suggestion is under a study phase and there’s no timeline for its implementation.
