Brazilian iron ore exports up 13.4 percent in February

According to the statistics provided by Brazil's National Union of the Industry of Extraction of Iron and Base Metals (Sinferbase), in February this year Brazil's iron ore exports amounted to 19.4 million metric tons, rising by 13.4 percent year on year and down 1.3 percent compared to January.

The share of the world's largest iron ore exporter Vale in Brazil's total iron ore exports in February equalled 85 percent, amounting to 16.5 million metric tons, up 10.4 percent year on year. As for other miners, Samarco exported 2.2 million mt of iron ore in February, rising by 29 percent, while MMX and Anglo American reported respectively 399,000 mt and 349,000 mt of iron ore exports in February.

In the first two months of 2013, Brazilian iron ore exports rose by 30 percent year on year, increasing to 39 million metric tons. Vale's share in Brazil's total iron ore exports in the January-February period of this year reached 88.5 percent, amounting to 34.5 million metric tons, up 27 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2012.

Meanwhile, Brazilian iron ore pellet exports in February this year amounted to 4 million metric tons, rising by 4.5 percent year on year, while in the first two months of the year its iron ore pellet exports fell to 7 million mt, down two percent compared to the same period last year.
