On October 25, Donalam SRL, the Romanian company of the AFV Beltrame Group, one of Europe's leading producers of merchant bars and special steels, announced that, despite difficult economic conditions, it sold over 155,000 mt of rebar and high-quality steel products in the first nine months this year.
"Despite the challenging market conditions, our company's foothold in the local market has been strengthened by the sales of rebar produced in Targoviste during the first nine months of the year. These results underscore that local production is not merely a trend but a necessity, vital for reducing the country's reliance on imports and ensuring long-term sustainable economic growth amid global uncertainties," Dan Cheroiu, sales director at Donalam, said in the company’s press release.
Donalam SRL, which operates in Calarasi and Targoviste, achieved a local market share of about 24 percent for rebar, while it invested more than €30 million in modernizing both of its facilities in 2023 with the goal of strengthening its position in the local market and elevating Romania back to the status of a major European steel producer.
As previously reported by SteelOrbis, before the start of rebar production in Targoviste, Romania relied completely on imports to meet local market demand, especially from Egypt, Moldova, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, and Italy. However, with the acquisition of COS Targoviste, Donalam's facility in Targoviste began rebar production in June 2022, and the plant now has a rebar production capacity of roughly 15,000 mt per month. The goal is to boost production capacity to over 58,000 mt per month, which equates to over 600,000 mt per year, allowing Donalam to supply nearly half of Romania's domestic rebar demand for building projects.
