Yesterday, April 8, operations at the hot metal area of the Ferriera di Servola plant in Trieste, part of the Italian group Arvedi since 2014, came to a final halt with the permanent shutdown of its two blast furnaces. During the five years of its ownership of the Trieste plant, Acciaieria Arvedi, part of Arvedi Group, invested over €250 million there, resuming production of pig iron following the prescriptions of the environmental authorization document and fulfilling its obligations to the local and central authorities. It also started up on the same site a new cold rolling and processing plant. Following a formal request made by local official institutions, Acciaieria Arvedi started a process of decarbonization at the site and of industrial conversion of the operations. The final shutdown of the blast furnaces represents the first step of this complex journey undertaken by Arvedi Group with the coordination of Italy’s economic development ministry.

"The  technically complex shutdown process, started at the beginning of March, has been completed in a regular manner, in full respect of safety rules and the present sanitary restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic," said the company.

Arvedi Group president Giovanni Arvedi commented, "This is one of the saddest days of my long professional life."
