St. Louis, Missouri-based Arch Coal, a global coal producer for the steel and power generation industries, announced Monday that its Arch Coal Asia-Pacific Pte. Ltd. subsidiary has increased its profile in China to help meet growing global demand for metallurgical and thermal coals. Arch has established an office in Beijing's Chaoyang District and hired Zhang Shijie to lead the effort. He will report to Renato Paladino, president of Arch Coal Asia-Pacific. Zhang Shijie will facilitate metallurgical and thermal coal transactions and logistics in China.

"The opening of an office in China is a natural next step as we raise our stake in the seaborne coal trade," said Arch Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Paul A. Lang. "In particular, a Beijing office will be advantageous as we expand our metallurgical coal portfolio with the addition of high-vol A product from our new Leer mine."
