Arcelor and TKS to produce high manganese steel

Luxembourg-based steel producer Arcelor and German steel producer ThyssenKrupp Stahl (TKS) announced that they signed an agreement to combine their Research & Development efforts to jointly engineer high manganese steel for the automotive sector. With its combination of high strength and superior malleability, the new steel will allow manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight by more than 20%. This in turn will reduce fuel consumption and increase the safety of new vehicles. The new high manganese steel will be available to car manufacturers beginning in 2006.
