Alpha Natural Resources posts net loss for Q1

Virginia, US-based metallurgical coal producer Alpha Natural Resources has issued its financial results for the first quarter of 2012.

According to the financial results, the company has reported a net loss of $29.1 million in the given quarter compared to a net income of $49.8 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Sales revenues in the first quarter of 2012 saw an increase of 66 percent, rising to $1.6 billion, due to the inclusion of the operations of Massey Energy Co.

The company stated that it has updated its shipment guidance for 2012, planning to ship between 20 million mt and 24 million mt of Eastern metallurgical coal, compared to the previous range of 20 million mt to 25 million mt.
