Brescia-based Italian long steel producer Alfa Acciai has announced it has reached an agreement with US-based Harsco Metals regarding the management of the steel mill's scrap yard.

According to the long-term agreement, Harsco Metals will reorganize Alfa Acciai's scrap yard and develop new solutions to reuse scrap smelting by-products, while the company will also operate directly inside the Italian mill handling a daily average of 8,000-10,000 mt of scrap.

Meanwhile, Alfa Acciai will invest €13 million in order to buy three electric engine cranes to replace its diesel engine cranes, a new fleet of scrap handling vehicles and state-of-the-art weighing systems. Moreover, the company has also built a new by-products recovery shop in which a new dust suppression system will be installed by the end of the current year.

Due to the partnership with Harsco Metals, Alfa Acciai will be able to rely on an accurate scrap feeding service, allowing the company to focus on other smelting process-related issues. The final results will be reduction of energy consumption and lowering of polluting emissions.
