AISI reports US weekly raw steel production up 72.2 percent year-on-year

According to a June 1 report by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), for the week ending May 29, 2010, US domestic raw steel production was 1,766,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 73.0 percent.  For that same week, production was 1,026,000 tons while the capability utilization then was 42.8 percent. Compared to historical data, these statistics indicate that current week production represents a 72.2 percent increase from the same period in 2009.

However, production for the week ending May 29, 2010 declined 1.2 percent from the previous week, when production was reported at 1,787,000 tons with a capability utilization rate of 73.9 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through May 29, 2010 was 35,963,000 tons, at a capability utilization rate of 69.9 percent. This represents a 66.9 percent increase from the 21,547,000 tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 42.5 percent.

Broken down by districts, the production for the week ending May 29, 2010 in thousands of net tons is as follows: Northeast Coast: 137; Pittsburgh/Youngstown: 121; Lake Erie: 44; Detroit: 122; Indiana/Chicago: 465; Midwest: 236; Southern: 573 and Western: 68.
