The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) filed a legal challenge to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent decision to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act.
Arguing that the EPA’s move will not address the climate change on a global basis and place significant burdens on US steel manufacturers, the AISI filed a petition for review with the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on Tuesday. The Institute is challenging the Endangerment Finding on the grounds that the EPA’s analysis of the evidence before it and its process for reaching its findings were fundamentally inadequate.
“Effective climate policy must account for and fully offset the harmful competitive impact that unilateral regulatory action could have on energy intensive industries that manufacture globally traded goods,” stated AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson, and requested that Congress take the lead in resolving the complex issue through the legislative process.
