Steel scrap purchase prices of local mills in Russia are mainly continuing to trend up, taking into account that they are aiming to secure their required tonnages. The producers in the Central region have made the highest increase over the past two weeks, while Southern region-based producers have indicated somewhat moderate rebounds. In the Ural area, the purchase prices of mills have remained unchanged for now, but are expected to inch up shortly. “Scrap suppliers are tending to sit on their volumes, expecting some further increase in local prices. In the meantime, the volume of scrap transportation via railways has dropped to end-of-March levels, which is very low for August,” a steel mill told SteelOrbis.
On the scrap exporters’ side, the traders in the Baltic region have been somewhat squeezed by the downturn in Turkey’s import prices and the effective export duty. Accordingly, they have decreased their scrap purchase prices by $22-26/mt (RUB 1,600-1,900/mt) over the same period.
