Domestic scrap prices in Poland have increased significantly over the past month. Market players report that Polish steel producers may be increasing their scrap procurement quotations to support their finished steel prices. It was previously reported by SteelOrbis that Polish steelmakers had continued production as usual while other European mills were taking a break over the holiday season.
Prices in the local Polish market for HMS I scrap are currently at €350/mt DAP, moving up from the €295/mt DAP level recorded early July. Polish producers are willing to buy scrap at higher levels. “For three months, there was very little demand for steel in Poland, but now demand has recovered,” a Polish source commented.
There is no problem observed in Poland regarding scrap generation. Meanwhile, a Polish source reports that not much scrap has been sold from Poland to Turkey over the past month. “Most of the scrap went to North African countries such as Egypt and Morrocco. Also, India bought significant tonnages in containers. We are monitoring the market and see that Turkish mills may not be able to buy scrap at levels higher than the current price levels due to their rebar and billet prices,” the source added. Positive sentiment continues to support domestic scrap prices in Poland and a further increase seems possible for now.
