The Italian domestic scrap market is still trending up due to the influence of the international market and the need for local steel mills to buy. Local scrap prices have inched up by €5/mt in the past ten days. Local demand appears strong, especially when compared with the still rather limited supply. But, according to several sources, demand is also strong because the stocks of different steelmakers have not yet reached satisfactory levels.
To date, all sources interviewed by SteelOrbis expect further price increases in January, though they find it hard to quantify them. A few scrap suppliers think prices may go up by €10/mt.
Looking at international prices, HMS I/II 80:20 import prices in Turkey have recorded an increase of almost 14 percent in the past month, reaching levels close to $300/mt CFR.
