According to the latest information collected by SteelOrbis on the Italian domestic scrap market, current price levels are as follows:

Quality

Average price (€/mt)

HMS I/II 80:20

310-320 ($409-422/mt)

Shredded (E40)

335-340 ($442-449/mt)

Busheling (E8, E8C)

330-350 ($436-462/mt)

*Prices are delivered to customer, excluding Vat

‘Stability' seems to be the keyword for ferrous scrap quotations in the Italian market and, according to many market operators, this will continue to be the case in May. Most SteelOrbis sources believe that in the current difficult economic situation the sideways trend followed by scrap quotations at present is the best condition they could hope for. The price gap between low and top tier qualities is still quite narrow, and for certain spot orders busheling is even cheaper than heavy melting scrap (HMS).

During April, also influenced by days off for holidays, scrap demand has been just moderate on average and has been scarce in the case of shredded. In May the situation is expected to improve with respect to demand, even if this will not be sufficient to lift scrap prices. The most optimistic traders believe that average quotations could increase by €5-10/mt ($7-13/mt), while others state that the domestic market will go through another month of sideways movement.

€1 = $ 1.32
