Demand for US import HDG coil remains steady, but sources say the fate of the import market will hinge on the still-pending decision by the Trump administration with regard to Section 232 tariffs and quotas; a decision is expected late next week.
Brazil, which had been a popular source of US import HDG coil in the past, has already expressed a desire to modify the deal they struck previously, adding that when the Trump administration proposed quotas, it came in the form of a “take it or leave it” offer.
In a press release, the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and the Foreign Relations Ministry, said “The Brazilian government regrets that the negotiating process has been interrupted and reiterates that it remains open to building reasonable solutions for both parties.”
Countries in the EU have also expressed sweeping pessimism that they will win a long-term exemption from Section 232 tariffs. For now, the fate of imported HDG and Galvalume coil remains in limbo until the final Trump administration decision is rendered.
In terms of current import pricing, the most recently heard pricing for US import 0.012”x40.875” G30 HDG coil from Mexico was heard at $60-$63 cwt. ($1323-$1389/mt or $1200-$1260/nt., FOB Houston.
