The most commonly reported spot market price transaction range for US domestic base price hot dipped galvanized (HDG) has endured an additional $0.50 cwt. ($11/mt or $10/nt) correction since our last report a week ago, which brings the current average price to the range of $35-$36 cwt. ($772-$794/mt or $700-$720/nt), ex-Midwest mill.
SteelOrbis sources, however, say that while “the current range is representative of the average price, prices seem to be softening a little bit more with each passing day,” one source said.
“I think there are a lot of people who wake up every day with their fingers crossed that today is the day the market finally settles, but most of us feel that prices aren’t done adjusting,” said a Midwest-based service center source. “The market shot up way too far, way too fast earlier this year due to the trade cases, and all [the domestic flats mills’] price increases were supply based and not demand based. This was bound to happen.”
Lead times are still hovering at approximately five weeks, however some buyers report being able to get delivery “slightly before that.”
