US wire rod imports up 1.5 percent in December

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of wire rod totaled 38,462 mt in December 2019, up 1.5 percent from November but down 59.4 percent from December 2018 levels. By value, wire rod imports totaled $27.4 million in December 2019, compared to $28.7 million in the previous month and $67.7 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most wire rod from Canada in December, with 22,102 mt, compared to 18,787 mt in November and 20,929 mt in December 2018. Other top sources of imported wire rod in December include Japan, with 7,414 mt; Germany, with 6,135 mt; and Mexico, with 1,968 mt.
