The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that trade using surface transportation between the US and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners soared in January 2011.
Compared to January 2010, US trade between Canada and Mexico was 19.5 percent higher in January 2011, reaching $67.7 billion. The freight value level also rose 1.8 percent from December 2010.
Surface transportation trade between the US and Canada totaled $40.3 billion in January, up 17.8 percent compared to January 2010. US-Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $27.5 billion in January, which reflects a 22.1 percent increase compared to January 2010.
In January 85.1 percent of US trade with Canada and Mexico moved on land, 10.7 percent moved by vessel, and 4.3 percent moved by air.
