US steel mill shipments increase 12.9 percent in January

US steel mills shipped 8.5 million net tons (nt) of steel products in January, according to a report Monday from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). January shipments were up 5.1 percent from December 2011, and 12.9 percent from the 7.5 million nt shipped in January 2011.

A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes: cold rolled sheet shipments were up 24 percent; hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip increased 19 percent; and hot rolled sheet shipments fell 9 percent.
