US mill shipments in March down 1.9% from last year

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Wednesday that for the month of March 2008, US steel mills shipped 9,158,000 net tons, a 1.9 percent decrease compared to March 2007 shipments, and a 0.2 percent decrease from February 2008 shipments.

AISI reports that year-on-year, year-to-date shipments show the following change in mill shipments to end-use markets: service centers and distributors, up 4.1 percent; automotive, down 1.2 percent; construction and contractors' products, down 1.2 percent; and oil and gas, up 8.8 percent.

AISI is comprised of 31 steel-producing member companies and 130 associate and affiliate steel supplier members, representing approximately 75 percent of both US and North American steel capacity.
