Ukraine’s rolled steel product consumption rises 33.8 percent in Jan-Aug

According to the data issued by metal trading enterprise Ukrainian Mining and Metallurgical Company (UGMK), in January-August this year Ukraine consumed about 4.2 million mt of rolled steel products, up 33.8 percent year on year.

In August, Ukraine's consumption of rolled steel products increased by 15.5 percent compared to July and rose by 32.3 percent compared to August last year.

In January-August this year, the share of imports in the domestic rolled steel product market amounted to 20.8 percent, up from 13.9 percent in the same period last year.

The biggest increases were seen in the consumption of angles and cold rolled sheet, rising by 31 percent and 28 percent year on year in January-August 2010.

Meanwhile, in August, rebar deliveries increased by 32.6 percent year on year and by 51.1 percent month on month, with 92 percent of overall deliveries being directed to metal trading companies. 

During the first eight months of this year, UGMK noted the increase of the share of ‘other rolled steel products' in Ukraine's total volume of rolled steel product consumption to 37.6 percent from 26.5 percent in the same period last year, mainly due to the rise of 4.7 percentage points in the share of round billet, the increase of 1.5 percentage points in the share of round bar, and the rise of 0.8 percentage points in the share of square billets. At the same time, during the period in question, UGMK noted a significant decrease of 7.0 percentage points in the share of hot rolled steel.

In January-August this year, Ukraine's biggest consumers of rolled steel were the metal trade sector, shipments to which amounted to 28.2 percent of total rolled steel product deliveries, followed by the pipe sector, with its share of overall consumption in the domestic rolled steel market amounting to 26.2 percent, and machine building, with a share of 17.1 percent.
