Ukraine’s AMK extends iron ore price hike deliberations

Thursday, 08 May 2008 14:25:07 (GMT+3)   |

The Ukrainian Antimonopoly Committee (AMK) has decided to extend its initial period for deliberations on whether to open an investigation into domestic iron ore price increases for another 60 days. The AMK is to determine whether to open an investigation into an iron ore price rise performed by Ukraine-based steel and iron ore producer Metinvest Holding (Metinvest).

The complaint on the issue was submitted by three Ukrainian steel producers, Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich), Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) and Zaporizhstal, which argued that, by increasing iron ore prices for domestic consumers by 65 percent as of April, Metinvest is abusing its monopolistic position in the Ukrainian iron ore market and their dependence on iron ore supplies as none of the plaintiffs have their own iron ore resources.
