Turkish consumer confidence rises in January

According to the monthly consumer tendency survey released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the consumer confidence index* in Turkey, which stood at 78.79 points in December 2009, increased by 0.57 percent month on month in January, rising to 79.24 points.

According to the indices based on individual questions asked of Turkish consumers concerning the consumer tendency, in January this year the index for the general current economic situation increased by 1.79 percent month on month to 70.07 points, while the index for the general economic situation in the next three months rose by 1.63 percent to 73.48 points.

Meanwhile, in January, the index for the probability of buying durable goods in the next six months increased by 4.34 percent to 13.35 points, the index for the probability of buying a car in the next six months increased slightly by 0.02 percent to 8.07 points and the index for the probability of buying or building a home in the next 12 months dropped by 12.98 percent to 6.65 points.


* When the index is above 100 it indicates an optimistic outlook, when it is equal to 100 it indicates a neutral outlook, and below 100 it points to a pessimistic outlook.
