Turkey’s coking coal imports down 7.8 percent in Jan-Feb

According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in February this year Turkey's coking coal imports amounted to 2.02 million mt, down 21.4 percent year on year and increasing by 1.8 percent compared to January, which had witnessed the lowest monthly volume since January last year. Turkey's coking coal imports indicated a monthly average of 2 million mt in the first two months of the current year, following the increased import tonnages observed in the fourth quarter of 2012, as can be seen in the chart below.

Turkey's coking coal imports from Russia in February this year amounted to 842,078 mt, constituting the country's largest coking coal source in February, while imports from Russia increased 10.8 percent compared to January and were 8.5 percent higher year on year. Turkey's coking coal imports from Colombia, which was the second largest coking coal source in February, increased to 630,910 mt in February, double month on month, following the strong fall recorded in January. Meanwhile, the US exported 69,256 metric tons of coking coal to Turkey in February, falling to the lowest level in 13 months.

In the first two months of the current year, Turkey's coking coal imports totaled 4 million metric tons, decreasing 7.8 percent compared to the same period of 2012. Turkey's top coking coal import sources in January-February this year:
