The CEO of Ternium, Maximo Vedoya, said that industrial companies in Nuevo León lost MXN 11 billion ($608 million) due to the theft of goods transported in 2022, reported the Chamber of the Transformation Industry of Nuevo Leon (CAINTRA), of which Vedoya is president.

The industrialists of Nuevo Leon reported a loss due to the theft of merchandise transported on highways, railways and additional costs to avoid or correct the losses. This affects 56.3 percent of industrial companies, excluding commercial and service companies.

The main products stolen were cement, rods, wire, steel, copper, groceries, among others. Nuevo Leon is the largest steel economy in Mexico.

To try to mitigate theft, companies invested nearly $248 million in additional insurance premiums, transportation monitoring systems, escort cars, truck lock systems, expenses for drivers assaulted by crime, and penalties for not delivering the merchandise that was stolen on time, among other items.

CAINTRA requested to reinforce the presence of the National Guard and state police on highways throughout the country; facilitate and expedite the reporting of cargo theft, among others.
