Technology project of €40 million from European steel giants

European steel giants Corus, Arcelor and ThyssenKrupp, together with certain industrial organizations, research institutes and universities have submitted European Commission a project of €40 million, including reduction of carbon-dioxide emission in steel making. The project is called ULCOS (Ultra Low CO2 Steelmaking). This project is a part of European Steel Technology Platform, which was launched in July 2003 to discuss European steel industry in 2030. The discussion topics of the Platform include competitiveness among third countries, problems at workplace, raw material and energy problems and utilization of new technologies. Related with the problems that European steel industry may face in 2030, European Union (EU) Commission asked steel producers to search for a technology which may reduce carbon-dioxide emission in steelmaking. ULCOS project is submitted to Commission in line with this demand. However, EU Commission has not approved the project yet.
