Taiwanese flat steelmaker China Steel Corporation (CSC) produced 7.82 million metric tons of steel in 2009, decreasing by 18.96 percent, while its sales volume amounted to 8.11 million metric tons, down 16.74 percent, both compared to 2008.

Meanwhile, the company's sales revenue in 2009 totaled NTD 165.41 billion (US$5.17 billion), declining by 35.48 percent, and it registered a profit before tax of NTD 20.16 billion (US$630.55 million), down 33.37 percent.

On the other hand, in the last quarter of 2009, the sales volume of CSC reached 2.27 million metric tons, its operating revenue was NTD 50.06 billion (US$1.57 billion) and its pretax profits amounted to NTD 17.91 billion (US$560.18 million). Compared to pre-tax profits of NTD 11.05 billion in Q3 2009, earnings in Q4 increased by NTD 6.85 billion due to the recovery of steel prices, the decline of raw material costs, the recommissioning of its blast furnace No. 3 with lower production costs, and the continuous improvement in the steel business.
