South Korean scrap imports up 8 percent in January-September

According to South Korean preliminary trade statistics, the country imported 4.64 million mt of ferrous scrap in the first nine months of 2018, up 8 percent compared to the 4.3 million mt of scrap in the first nine months of 2017. Ferrous scrap imports were reportedly strong in the first six months but moved marginally down in Q3.

In August, South Korea imported 0.56 million mt while it imported 0.31 million mt in September.

During the January to September period, South Korea imported 3.07 million mt (66 percent) from Japan, 0.67 million mt (14 percent) from Russia, 0.58 million mt (13 percent) from the US, 0.10 million mt from the UK (2 percent), and 0.22 million mt (5 percent) from other destinations.
