German plantmaker SMS Demag has announced that South Korea's largest steel producer POSCO has placed an order with the company for the supply of a 5.5 meter wide X-roll® heavy plate rolling mill to be built at Gwangyang on Korea's southern coast.
In the first stage of construction, the new mill will have an annual production capacity of two million metric tons of finished plates and is scheduled to start production in the middle of 2010.
The mill in question will specialize in the production of plates which are 6 to 200 mm thick and 900 to 5,400 mm wide.
In a statement regarding the order, SMS Demag said it will supply all the key components of the mill equipment for the X-roll® heavy plate rolling mill.
The new mill is in line with POSCO's intention to mainly serve the growing market for high strength plates.
