The construction of the 632-meter high Shanghai Center started on November 29. Fully according with the standards of green buildings, it will become the highest building in China surpassing the 420.5-meter high Jinmao Tower and the 492-meter high Shanghai World Financial Center.

Designed by Gensler, Shanghai Center is located at Lujiazui, Pudong district of east China's Shanghai. Its main body height and total height will reach 580 meters and 632 meters respectively and it will be the tallest building in China.

The building of the skyscraper will be completed by 2014 with a total investment of RMB 14.8 billion ($2.34 billion). It's expected the underground projects will be finished by the time of 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and the structure's roof is to be completed by 2012 and the building will start operation partially by then.

Shanghai Center will be a green building. Despite the green energy saving technology adopted by most skyscrapers in the world, Shanghai Center will be the first building seeking to register for a high level of building certification from the China Green Building Committee and LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
