Severstal to extend shutdown at Sparrows Point

Russian steelmaker Severstal announced Thursday that hot rolled operations at its steel mill in Sparrows Point, Maryland will remain idled through March of next year.

Severstal had originally planned to reopen the mill at the start of 2011, but cited existing market conditions for the change.

The company is hopeful, however, that market conditions would improve enough next year to warrant a production increase.
