Sahaviriya Steel Industries to expand capacity

Thai hot rolled steel producer Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) is reportedly planning to build a blast furnace with an annual capacity of 30 million tons. As previously reported by SteelOrbis, SSI will stop production for 45 days in December 2004 for maintenance and installation of new equipment for capacity expansion. The Industry Ministry has recently approved SSI's blast furnace project, which will be materialized in five phases by 2019. In the first phase, the capacity will be increased to 5 million tons by 2005 and with the other phases, capacity will be increased to 30 million ton by 2019. SSI officials stated that the company plans to expand production as demand in steel market is strong.
