According to a recent announcement by South Africa's government, Tshipi Borwa, an opencast manganese mine in Kalahari, is allowed to fully commence operations from May 1. Tshipi's management has been working with contractors, suppliers and South African rail, port and pipeline company Transnet to coordinate the partial recommencement of production and exports, the company stated.

Last month, the Tshipi Borwa manganese mine was temporarily shut down due to coronavirus-related restrictions, with the suspending of manganese ore exports for a three-week period up to April 16.

In the past year ending on February 29, the Tshipi mine produced and exported 3.41 million mt of manganese ore, SteelOrbis has learned.

In the meantime, South Africa's underground mines remain limited to 50 percent output levels.
