OLAF: China circumvents EU’s tariffs with steel shipments via Vietnam

The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), a part of the European Commission, has stated that it has found that Chinese steel has been shipped through Vietnam to evade EU tariffs, according to a Reuters report.

OLAF told Reuters that China has evaded roughly €8.2 million of antidumping (AD) duties imposed on coated steel with shipments through Vietnam with Vietnamese certificates of origin.

According to Reuters, there is no ongoing investigation into this matter; however, steelmakers in the EU are now expecting the EU to start a circumvention probe.

Meanwhile, Reuters also noted that in August this year the EU imposed provisional duties on corrosion-resistant steel imports from China and the mentioned imports, which nearly doubled last year, steadied in the year to August just as imports from Vietnam surged from very low levels.
