New push begins to unionize Dofasco

The United Steelworkers (USW) union is making another drive to unionize Canadian steelmaker Dofasco Inc. The campaign began in earnest about 10 weeks ago even though it has managed to keep the union at bay by matching wages at competing Stelco Inc. Dofasco has remained largely under the radar until earlier this fall when Arcelor SA attempted a hostile takeover prompting Dofasco to seek out another European steelmaker, ThyssenKrupp (TK), to rescue it. Inevitably, Dofasco is poised to be restructured if shareholders approve TK’s takeover bid on January 10. The union has indicated that it has stepped up its organization efforts due in large to concerned calls from Dofasco employees that they may have to make concessions under new management.
