Mittal Steel SA confirms last week's fire outbreak

Mittal Steel South Africa has confirmed Tuesday, October 31, the outbreak of a fire caused by a gas bottle incident which occurred at its Vanderbijlpark plant last Tuesday, October 24. Mittal Steel SA said that the incident will result in the loss of approximately of 100,000 metric tons of liquid steel production. Two units at the plant were affected by the fire. The company intends to restart works at Continuous Caster V2 within eight days, but Continuous Caster V1 will only operate within three to four weeks. In addition Mittal Steel SA said that measures have been put in place to minimize the impact on its customers. The measures include diverting exports from Saldanha to Vanderbijlpark, looking at the possibility of importing slabs as well as considering the import of finished products to limit the effects on the domestic market.
