Mechel, one of the leading Russian mining and steel producing groups, has announced the preliminary registration of its subsidiaries' products for compliance with the European Union's REACH Regulations. Meanwhile, the producer has also announced the receipt of the certificate of compliance with European standards for the fiber produced by its Lithuania-based subsidiary Mechel Nemunas.

Accordingly, in January 2009 Mechel Nemunas obtained a certificate of compliance with the European standards for the fiber it manufactures, allowing it to supply the product in question to the European construction market. Mechel Nemunas started to produce fiber, an innovative product used to increase the strength of concrete structures, in the fall of 2008.

The products that have obtained preliminary registration for compliance with the European Union's REACH Regulations  include those produced by the following Mechel subsidiaries: Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, Izhstal, Southern Urals Nickel Plant, Vyartsilya Metal Products Plant, Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant, Mechel Coke, Tikhvin Smelting Plant, Moscow Coke and Gas Plant, Beloretsk Metallurgical Plant, Urals Stampings Plant, Chelyabinsk Branch of Urals Stampings Plant, Mechel Targoviste, Mechel Campia Turzii and Ductil Steel.

"Obtaining European preregistration significantly increases our products' competitiveness and broadens our presence in the European markets. Obtaining the European certificate for the fiber manufactured by our Lithuanian subsidiary confirms that Mechel's products can successfully compete in the international markets and that Mechel remains committed to providing the highest quality products and services to its customers," Mechel's senior vice president Vladimir Polin commented.
