Following the various reports regarding the difficulties experienced by Turkish steel producer Kurum Holding with its Russian Rostov Region-based steel mill project, KurumStalRostov (for further details please see Construction of KurumStalRostov awaits location approval), SteelOrbis has contacted the company to find out more about the situation.
In answer to SteelOrbis' queries, a senior official at Kurum stated that the Volgadonsk Interdepartmental Commission on Industrial Enterprises Allocation (MVK) has decided to allow the construction of KurumStalRostov within the territory of Volgadonsk city if the mill meets all ecological requirements. Representatives from Kurum participated at the MVK's August 29 meeting on the issue, during which all votes were cast in favor of Kurum's project with the exception of a single abstention.
In addition, the Kurum official, disclosed that during the current week the company is to hold a meeting with the governor of Rostov and his staff to discuss the situation. However, because the Rostov region administration has made clear its full support of the project, Kurum is upbeat regarding the outcome of the meeting and the resolution of any outstanding problems.
Moreover, SteelOrbis has learned that another candidate, Russian Metallurgical Holding, has also expressed a desire to construct a steel mill in Volgadonsk and that it will participate in the auction to be held by the city administration for land allocation.
