Japan asking China to drop import tariffs

After China implemented safeguard measures on steel imports valid for 180 days effective from 24 May 2002, Japanese Nippon Steel Corp. president Akira Chihaya advised that they believe the Japanese steelmakers should voluntarily reduce their exports to China. The fact that some products exported to China were reexported to Japan after a further process is a concern that worries the Japanese steelmakers. Therefore during a bilateral meeting to be held on Monday in Beijing, Japan is intending to discuss the reexporting issue with China as well as offering them to retract their safeguard measures. According to Japanese officials China should follow the WTO rules and withdraw the import restrictions.
