Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri's CEO Giuseppe Bono has announced a rescue package aimed at enabling the company's recovery. Fincantieri has been heavily impacted by the global crisis, and now it finds it difficult to compete with South Korean group STX and German giant Meyer Werft.

Accordingly, Mr. Bono explained that the plan is to dismiss 2,551 workers (out of a total of 8,200) and to shut down the plants at Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples, and at Sestri Ponente, near Genova, as well as to reorganize the production site in Riva Trigoso, also near Genova. Fincantieri's cruise liner production, which is the core business of the group, will be concentrated at the shipyards located in Marghera, near Venice, and at Monfalcone, near Gorizia, while the plants in Ancona and Palermo will be respectively focused on smaller hulls and ship repair operations.
