According to a recent press release, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) requested, via correspondence to US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, that the US government make every effort to negotiate a trade path forward with China. Trade representatives from China and the US are scheduled to meet at the end of August.

ISRI detailed the severe financial impact upon ferrous and non-ferrous recyclers in the US due to current tariff policies and import restrictions already imposed by China. Further, ISRI noted that import tariffs on auto shredder wear parts, of which 85 percent are sourced from China, are also a financial burden to the over “300+ auto shredders in 44 states.”
